While situated between two armies of Kaurvas and Pandavas on a chariot drive by Lord Krishna, Arjun told Lord that would not fight his nears and dears for the sake of earthly kingdom. Even the unalloyed empires of the heavn and other Godly kingdoms cannot mitigate the distress his senses are undergoing at that moment.
See verse 8, 9 and 10 of chapter two of Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta:
Na hi parpashayamimamapnuyatyad
yachhokamuchshoshrhamindriyarham I
Avapya bhumavsapatnamridhanam
rajyam surarhamapi chadhipatyam II (2.8)
Even gaining undisputed sovereignty and affluent kingdom of earth and Lordship over Gods I don’t see any means enabling me to drive away grief which is drying my senses.
A great warrior Arjun is so perturbed to think of the after war situation.
Before even fighting it, he does not find any solace in undisputed Sovereign kingdom and Lordship of Gods which could ward off distress which was drying his senses.
When a person is overwhelmed by deep attachment to worldly objects or relations, he is deeply disturbed even by apprehension of their loss. This person indulges in high sermons of detachment without actually practicing it.
Ultimately Arjun decides not to fight his relations to gain kingdom or world objects.
Evamuktwa hrishikesham gudakeshah prantap I
Na yotsaya eti govindamuktwa tusharhim babhuvah II (2.9)
Sanjay said: O King, having thus spoken to Shri Krishna, Arjun again determinately said to Shri Krishna “I will not fight”, he became silent.
This verse is important verse as it has made almighty to dispel Arjun’s doubts about non existing relationship which self soul has been conditioned to establish with an embodiment and that of others like him.
This wholesome is self and self alone. Whatever is seen, heard, perceived is nothing but superimposition in self, hallucination, a day dream state.
Had the warrior in Arjun not shown this coward ness in retiring to the back of chariot (rathopastha) the all bliss message could not have come from divinity incarnate?
But as stated earlier, it was the Divine will of Almighty to give a message to mankind to deliver them from bondage of life and death that Arjun expressed his unwillingness to fight his revered elders and dear ones and it eventually made the Lord to reveal the truth about the self soul and its relation to world and Lord himself.
Lord Krishna is all merciful and resides in the core of heart of every being. It is astonishing that even the Lord is with us all the time but due to thin but hard to break veil of EGO we can not feel His presence within us.
In verse 23 of chapter 13 Lord Krishna describes this witness sitting in every being and says:
updrashtaanumanta ch bharta bhokta maheshwra I
parmatam eti chapyiukto deheasminpurshah parah II
The spirit dwelling in this body is really the same as Supreme.
It has been spoken as witness, the true guide, the sustainer of all, experiencer [as is embodied overlord] and the absolute as well
With such a subtle and clear message to the mankind from the Lord, if one still persists in darkness, it is his queer bad luck and one has to still undergo the circle of birth and rebirths.
If one comes to know the self and its illusion which is the reflection and destroyable, one comes to attains own blissful being Sat Chita Anand. One sheds all perception.
This world and the body with mind, speech and pranas, are delusive super imposition of self. Reasoning thus the soul embodiment takes stand on self, and gives up the world.
But it is not so easy as we are talking. It comes upon on Embodied self soul when Lord bless it
Ego does not vanish easily
It is apparent that it was eternal wish of Supreme Self to deliver an eternal message for the grief stricken self souls to deliver them from the cycle of birth and death.
This wish was the reason to bless human beings so much so that a warrior like Arjun stung by the instant humiliation of pulling down the ‘Sari’ of his wife ‘Droupadi’ to parade her naked in full view of courtesans including those kinsmen now shamelessly siding with his foes whom he should killed instantly, could have expressed his desire to withdraw from fighting.
The ego can come in any form. It may be desire; it may be anger or it may be any other form of duality.
Lord Krishna gave this divine message to mankind through Arjun from verse 11 and the dialogue of Lord Krishna with Arjun continued till verse 58 in chapter Eighteen of Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta.
Lord Krishna alerted Arjun in verse 59 and 60:
Yadahankaramashrityna yotsaya iti manyase I
Mathyesh vayavsayasa prikritistwam niyokshayati II
Sawbhavjen kontey nibdha svenkarmarha I
Kartumnechhesi yanmohatkrishayasiavashoapi tat II (18.59-60)
Out of egotism if you believe that you will not fight it is vain to resolve this as nature will drive to the act.
Bounden to do act by your nature, whatever you think not to do, YOU will be driven to perform helplessly.
Lord is telling Arjun in the mid of battle field, that his resolve to not to fight his nears and dears is false
By nature he is bound to retaliate in battle and his actions are prescribed by the very nature as a born soldier.
But all his resolve is the result of egotism of embodiment and its relations and which is false and none existing.
IT IS NOT ALWAYS EASY TO SHED IDENTIFICATION WITH BODY. IT IS VERY HARD TO REALIZE THAT I AM NOT A BODY BUT SIMPLY CONSCIOUSNESS MAKING ME AWARE OF MY BEING. IDENTIFICATION WITH MIND IS THE BASIC FEATURE WHICH CREATES THIS ATTACHMENT WITH BODY. iT IS AFTER SO MANY EMBODIMENTS THAT ONE COMES TO REALIZE THE REALITY.
