Lord Krishna incarnated at the time when there virtual prevalence of non religious practices, the purpose was to annihilate the demonic natured kings.
Mahabharata was an opportunity where score of kings had gathered to face or support Pandavas.
This was an occasion to deliver the holy and divine message to all human beings to attain liberation from transmigration by self realization.
Lord Krishna says in Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta that one who knows the self soul capable of killing or being killed is ignorant.
Ya enam veti hantaram yashchmanyate manyate hatam I
Ubho tao na vijanito nayam hanti na hanyate II (2.19)
He who knows that the soul to be capable of killing and who takes it as having been killed, they both are ignorant; for verily the soul neither kills nor is killed.
Soul is eternal and blissful. But as it attaches itself to material nature in form of embodiment, its manifestation account starts operating.
Due to identification of self soul with the body, as own self, the soul goes on migrating from one body to other.
When it leaves one body and enters another on account of its attachment with reactions of past deeds, the eternal self remains the same self.
This is something amazing. Just a mad man has no control over his action so is now self soul identifying with mind body that it unconsciously identifies itself with these organs and goes on transmigrating.
Material nature and eternal self soul being mutually distinct by their very nature, yet their distinction cannot be perceived. Self soul seems to be in material nature and voce versa. This is inscrutable power of Lord called illusion. This illusion is created by disturbance created by modes of material nature.
A self soul is true reflection of Supreme Self, all empowered divine and full of wisdom.
Whenever it happens to realize its true self, it is liberated.
Bondage was not real but it was there because of attachment.
Self soul is neither capable of killing nor it is ever killed but it departs from one body to enter another with the fruits of past deeds exhausting and body being left forcibly.
What is this all?
One should try to grasp the fact.
Self soul is incapable of doing anything at its own. It is an eternal bliss. When it remained in the service of Supreme Self, it opted to assert its own poweress. It found attractive material nature like a beautiful woman inviting a handsome boy. It then started building its own castles with evolutes of material nature. Since then it has been playing monkey in the hands of material nature, causing pair of dualities, pleasure or pain, happiness and distress, cold and warm etc These have never affected the self soul which is awareness and consciousness. It is same in all beings. A personal embodied soul pretending to kill another only kills the body by depriving it of consciousness.
EVERY BODY SEES DEPARTURE OF SELF SOUL BUT STILL ONE CANNOT PERCIEVE AS TO WHAT HAS DEPARTED FROM BODY. IT IS CONSCIOUSNESS WHICH LEAVES THE BODY. BUT WHILE LIVING IN THE BODY THIS CONSCIOUSNESS HAD BEEN IDENTIFYING WITH MIND AND TRYING TO ACQUIRE HAPPINESS FOR SENSES WITH SENSE OBJECTS. IT HAS BEEN TRYING TO ACQUIRE WHAT IS CALLED MENTAL SATISFACTION WHICH CAN NOT BE ACQUIRE BY MEANS OF SENSE GRATIFICATION. IT IS ALWAYS CRAVING FPR MORE AND MORE. ONE DESOIRE GIVES RISE TO AMNOTHER CAUSING CHAIN OF DESIRES WHICH IS TO BE EXTIGUISHED BY NOT SATISFYING TH BUT BY SHUNNING THEM
